Can Fish Help Prevent Your Child's Nasal Allergies?

In Sweden, a group of researchers conducted a study on how consuming fish may be linked to the prevention of nasal allergies in children. As part of the study, researchers gathered information from 1,590 children and their parents by asking both to answer questions regarding how often children consume 98 different foods and beverages. The conclusion of the study shows that children who consume fish may be less likely to develop allergies than those who do not.

For the study, researchers limited the types of fish on the list of foods to moderate and more oily types such as:

  • Herring
  • Mackerel
  • Salmon
  • Codfish
  • Pollock
  • Pike
  • Tuna
  • Fish fingers

The study concluded that children who consumed oily fish on a normal basis had a significantly decreased risk of developing allergic rhinitis, the inflammation of mucus membranes in the nasal passages. However, there was no research to show these types of fish were the direct or only cause of the decreased risks.

Some nutritionists and dieticians state the decrease in risk of allergic rhinitis may be due to children’s likelihood of consuming well-balanced diets. Well-balanced diets refer to diets including the consumption of food from all food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. In addition, dieticians believes that these children are more prone to diets that are rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fats.
