Does My Child Need Allergy Testing?

Allergies and asthma are very common in children; about 80% of children with asthma suffer allergies, and approximately 8% of children under age six have food allergies.

Most children’s allergies are mild or moderate, and can be controlled with simple treatment plans. Read below if you think your child may need to be tested for allergies, and contact the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia to make an appointment with one of our pediatric board-certified allergists.

Signs of Allergies in Children

The allergists at Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia specialize in both pediatric and adult allergies. We recommend bringing your child in for allergy testing in if they exhibit any of the following symptoms:

  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing, especially at night
  • Hives or swelling, especially if caused by an insect or animal bite
  • Skin rashes, dermatitis, or eczema
  • Itching or swelling in the throat or mouth
  • Runny nose
  • Cold-like symptoms that last longer than a normal cold

Allergy Testing for Children

If you suspect that your child may have allergies, it is helpful to have them tested as early as possible. Detecting and treating allergies early in life will improve your child’s quality of life, help avoid potentially dangerous reactions, and limit missed school days.

Our metro Atlanta allergy doctors use a variety of testing methods to identify allergic triggers in children. However, the most common pediatric allergy test is called a skin prick test, a minimally-invasive procedure that can test for multiple allergens at once.

During a skin prick test, the allergist will first use a tiny needle to prick the skin on the back and introduce the suspected allergic trigger. If your child is allergic to that substance, a small, red bump will form within approximately 15 – 30 minutes.
