Plan Ahead & Be Prepared: Back to School Allergies

While back-to-school season can be an exciting time, it is also an important time to remember that children with allergies and asthma can face unique challenges.

From discomfort and congestion that makes it difficult to concentrate or participate in recess to coughing and other symptoms that keep children up at night and lead to absences, allergies and asthma can wreak havoc on even the most motivated students. Fortunately, a little planning with these problems can help make sure conditions are properly treated and prevented so kids return to school fully prepared for the fall season!

Below are some common back-to-school problems when it comes to allergies and asthma:

  • Hay Fever - Hay fever can lead to congestion, stuffiness, sore throat, headache, sinus problems, fatigue, poor school performance, and school absences!
  • Food Allergies - If your child has food allergies, sending them off to school where they can trade food or buy school lunches can be a recipe for problems. Food allergies can cause severe breathing difficulties, swelling, hives, shock, and even life-threatening reactions.
  • Asthma - Asthma can be problematic for kids who want to enjoy and learn at school as it can cause coughing, wheezing, exercise limitation, and night time coughing. Managing symptoms can help keep kids in school and avoid absences!

No matter what your child may be dealing with, our team of Board Certified allergists at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia is here to help! We want to help children and parents understand and manage their allergies or asthma to achieve the following:
