Allergy Shots in the Atlanta Area

Board-Certified Allergists in Georgia

Allergy shots provide long term relief for Atlanta area patients who suffer from a variety of indoor, seasonal, and insect allergies, as well as common conditions such as asthma, recurrent and chronic sinusitis, and eczema.

Also known as immunotherapy, allergy shots gradually desensitize the immune system to certain allergens through regular, monitored substance exposure. Currently, allergy shots are the only treatment that changes the immune system, instead of solely treating allergy symptoms.

Allergy shots are also an effective treatment method for those who suffer from associated allergic conditions, such as ear infections and sinus infections.

Our immunotherapy program is directed by our board-certified, highly experienced allergists. As a result, our allergy shot treatment program reduces allergy symptoms by 80-90% for most people.

Allergy Shots Provide Treatment for Common Allergies

Allergy shots provide excellent results for some patients, but immunotherapy is not the right option for all people or allergies. It is important for allergy shot patients to have realistic goals about their treatment timeline and allergy desensitization.

The patients most likely to benefit from Atlanta area allergy shot treatment are people who:

  • Suffer from indoor allergies, like dust mites, cockroaches, pet dander, or mold.
  • Suffer from seasonal allergies, like grass pollens, tree pollens, or weed pollens.
  • Suffer from an allergy related condition, such as asthma, recurrent sinusitis, ear problems, or eczema.
  • Are allergic to insect stings.
  • Are only allergic to a few, difficult to avoid substances.
  • Frequently miss work or school due to severe allergies.
  • Have severe allergy symptoms.
  • Constantly rely on medication to control allergy issues.
  • Find that allergy medicine is no longer effective, or that the symptoms of allergy medicine interfere with daily life.
  • Suffer from another medical condition, such as asthma.
  • Want to reduce the risk of developing asthma.
  • Want to treat the cause of their allergy, not just the symptoms.
  • Are at least 4 years of age.

If you think you might be a good candidate for allergy shots in Atlanta, consult your allergy doctor at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia. Together you can discuss changing your current allergy treatment plan.

Allergy Shots for Adults and Children

Changing your immune system with allergy shots takes time. Immunotherapy slowly introduces a small amount of an allergen to the body in order to reduce negative side effects. The immune system becomes desensitized to the allergen as treatment progresses, and eventually the allergic reaction is minimized.

After a consultation with an Atlanta allergist, treatment begins with a buildup phase. The buildup phase lasts 3-6 months with appointments once or twice a week. The goal of the buildup phase is to gradually increase the amount of allergen being introduced, until the maintenance dose is reached.

Once the maintenance dose is reached, then the allergy shot maintenance phase begins. During the maintenance phase, allergy shot treatment occurs weekly, or a few times a month, to continue the desensitization process. The maintenance phase lasts 3-5 years after the buildup phase ends.

It is important to continue allergy shot treatments for the entire 3-5 year maintenance period for noticeable, long-term results. Not completing the full 3-5 year allergy shot plan will greatly reduce the treatment success rate.
