Allergy Testing for Children

Get children’s allergies treated at The Center for Allergy & Asthma.

Allergy testing for children is just as important as allergy testing for adults. Approximately 80% of children with asthma also have allergies, and about 8% of children under 6 suffer from food allergies.

At each of our metro Atlanta area locations, the board certified pediatric allergists of the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia perform similar allergy testing for children as for adults, including:

  • Skin tests: scratch/prick, intradermal, and patch
  • Blood tests: IgE
  • Lung tests: methacholine challenge, spirometry

These specialized allergy tests are supervised by one of our board-certified allergists to ensure the safety of our pediatric patients. Our doctors understand the severity of some reactions, such as anaphylaxis, and are prepared to administer the necessary medications to reverse these effects.

Does My Child Need To Be Tested for Allergies?

Allergies are just as common in infants and children as they are in adults. An estimated 8 – 10 % of children suffer from asthma, and 15 – 25% of children have allergic rhinitis. Combined, these children miss hundreds of thousands of school days each year.

Some of the most common signs of childhood allergies include:

  • Cold-like symptoms that last for more than a week
  • Coughing and wheezing—especially at night
  • Skin rashes, or dermatitis
  • Reactions to food, insect stings, or particular medications

If you suspect that your child suffers from allergies or allergy-related asthma, schedule an appointment with the allergy doctors at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia.

Benefits of Allergy Testing for Children

Understanding your child’s allergies can help to alleviate his or her symptoms. The benefits of children’s allergy testing at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia center on your ability to help your child find relief.

Allergy treatments at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia first aim to reduce or eliminate the child’s exposure to identified allergic triggers. Our doctors may prescribe certain medications, such as inhalers for children with allergic or childhood asthma, to help our patients live healthy, active lives.

When children display an allergic reaction to certain types of food, for instance, our board-certified doctors typically recommend an elimination diet and may prescribe an epinephrine auto-injector to treat sudden attacks.
