Allergy Do's and Don'ts

When we talk about allergies, one season always stands out amongst the rest — spring. But unfortunately, allergens can pop up throughout the entire year, not just when flowers bloom.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to help you better manage your symptoms whenever they may appear.

Do: Avoid outdoor activities in the morning

Pollen counts tend to be highest during the first half of the day, so try to stay indoors if you can, especially on windy days. Save any outdoor activities and exercise for the afternoon.

Don't: Open your windows during allergy season

Think twice about opening your windows to let the breeze in during allergy season. That breeze could carry pollen into your house. Instead, step outside briefly when you need a breath of fresh air.

Do: Keep your house clean and allergen-free

Cleaning your house frequently during allergy season will help you breathe more comfortably. Sweep and vacuum your floors regularly to get rid of any pollen your family might have tracked into the house, and wash your bedding on a regular basis. If you have pets that go outside, be aware that they may be bringing pollen into the house, too.

Don't: Try to treat your allergies like you would a cold

You might feel like you have a cold when your allergies are acting up. However, the two things are caused by completely different reactions in the body. A cold is a viral illness, while allergies are caused by the body's own immune response to a perceived threat. Remedies that help you feel better when you have a cold are unlikely to help you much if allergies are behind your symptoms.

Do: Take good care of your health during allergy season

Seasonal allergies aren't usually a serious health problem, but they do put some extra stress on your body. It's important to pay attention to your health during an allergy flare-up so your body doesn't get run down. Get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water to clear congestion, and eat a nutritious diet.
