How to Fight Off Winter Allergies

Unfortunately, spring isn’t the only season allergies can strike. While some people might have hay fever during the spring and are safe during the winter, others have indoor allergies that could affect them year-round. Mold, dust mites, and pet dander can all contribute to what are called winter allergies.

Part of the problem is turning on a heater that hasn’t been used for the past few months. Furnaces only used during the winter often send dust, mold spores, and insect parts into the air. This debris can get into a person’s nose and trigger an allergic reaction.

The best way to survive this winter onslaught is to rely on the same techniques you might use during pollen season. Antihistamines can help reduce sneezing, sniffling, and itching symptoms. If you tend to get congested, you can take a decongestant to help you sleep through the night a little better.

Last, immunotherapy is a potential option. This treatment can be in the form of allergy shots or under-the-tongue tablets that expose your body to gradually larger doses of the allergen. This approach can help curb your symptoms for a longer period of time without needing drugs.

Apart from medication, you can also help avoid a reaction at all by preparing for the winter ahead of time. Throw out shower curtains, wallpaper, and carpeting that might have mold. Make sure your showers and sinks are washed with a solution containing 5% bleach and a little detergent. You can also control dust mites and mold by using a dehumidifier in your house to keep the humidity in your home below 50%—higher humidity tends to encourage mold growth.
